Medical laboratories play a vital role in providing vital Information that assist in prevention ,diagnosis, treatment and management of diseases. This calls for a well-structured laboratory system that addresses issues of oversight and coordination to meet the public expectation.

While fulfilling its mandate of laboratory policy formulation and leadership, the NPHL ensures that its operation is within the management system requirements as prescribed by ISO 9000:2008. The NPHL also promotes quality laboratory systems as it provides national referral services to both public and private health sector; two of the national laboratories are accredited to the ISO 15189:2012 standards with a third one having received approval for accreditation. Other NPHL reference laboratories are still being mentored towards accreditation; a prove that NPHL continues in its commitment towards total quality laboratory systems.

NPHL STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES

1. To strengthen provisjon of quality Specialized public health laboratory services. by 2019, to contribute towards elimination of communicable diseases
2.Develop comprehensive and sustainable quality management ( systems resulting in attaining ISO 15189 accreditation for all reference laboratories in NPHL by 2019
3. Strengthen capacity of NPHL in management and governance to through collaboration with other sectors by 2019
4. Sustain and expand laboratory infrastructure, equipment and supply chain management to provide essential public health laboratory care by 2019
5. Improve decision-making and planning for public health laboratory services by increasing capability and efficiency of innovative and robust information and communication strategy



To support laboratories implementing SLMTA, NPHL established a center of excellence for equipment calibration, certification and training. Since inception in  2017, the center has trained, a total of 110 biomedical engineers and 30 laboratory managers, among them Trainer of Trainers (TOTs). This initiative has resulted in improvement of equipment output due to reduced downtime and service costs. An important milestone of center is that auxiliary equipment at NPHL no longer To service contracts since the trained biomedical engineers are able to perform these operations in-house.

As technology  innovations advance in the medical spheres NPHL has rolled out installation of a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) in 19 new Health facilities. The LIMS is expected to facilitate the automation of lab processes to enhance efficiency in the  workflow cycle.

To effectively perform its critical functions, NPHL, in  collaboration with other health programs supports  various laboratory-based population surveys to continually guide ¡t in reviewing its national strategic plans. Currently, NPHL is involved in the Kenya Population-based HIV Impact Assessment (KENPHIA)- a cross-sectional cluster survey meant to assess the prevalence of key HIV- related health indicators.
